What is a web directory?

Before search engines there were simple lists of interesting websites to surf through. This is famously how Yahoo! started

This may seem antiquated and impractical but that's the point.

Web directories often link to each other in a network called a "Web Ring". A good web ring will have you clicking URLs for hours.

What is PeerTube?

A video sharing platform, similar to YouTube or Vimeo

However, unlike major video platforms, PeerTube is decentralized. Instead of being run by a single corporation, it consists of a network of independently operated sites. Anyone can set up their own PeerTube server and join this network. This structure is similar to email: just as anyone can run their own email service and still communicate with other email services, PeerTube servers can interact with one another across the network.

PeerTube is part of "The Fediverse," a network of decentralized social media platforms that includes Mastodon and other alternatives. The Fediverse revives the spirit of the early internet, when individuals hosted their own forums, blogs, and bulletin board systems
